Thanks for getting back so quick! I have another question (This one is for all
of us):

I have 2 sets of Simmons. One old one (hard pads) and a later version (Softer
pads {SDS9}. How can I make the hard surfaces softer, so I can combine my kits.
Is there a softer wood That I can put under the old rubber surface?
Also, I noticed the red wire that is attached to the 1/4" input, whats it called
and where can I get a new one? THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR WISDOM!!!!!

comment: For my wisdom? Hehe...
The hard surface (SDS5) pads had later been offered with a rubber surface (called MkII) which was simply glued on the original acrylic surface, but the trigger quality was not the best as the signal from the trigger mic was much weaker (I removed the rubber from mine and use the rubber as a "Simmons" mouse pad at work!). So I would rather suggest to sell the hard SDS5 pads, they reach pretty good prices on Ebay as they are collector pieces and buy newer ones (SDS9 series) with the desired "native" rubber surface.

Concerning the "red wire" I cannot help... You are not talking about the connection between jack and mic?

How do you take apart the newer Simmons pads? The SDS9 pads. Thanks
comment: Hi Jay,
just stick your finger into the whole for the tom arm and press with this finger against the colored shell. When it starts to come of, be carefull not to break the noses of the shell.
Bye

Me again:
What\'s your procedure/materials/tools for polishing pads?

comment: Hi Rod,
for the shells I use ordinary stuff for car laquer polishing: polishing fluid and cotton. That\'s it. Concerning the rubber surfaces (especially the light grey SDX surfaces) I use liquid plastic cleaning fluid from my local filling station. These products may differ so always try them out anywhere else but on the pads! The plastic cleaner dissolves the outer layer a bit which is basically ok as this layer carries the dirt and stick marks. So what\'s going to be left is a clean rubber!
The same plastic cleaner is good for finishing the shells after having been polished.
I have been asked this question quiet often so probably it\'s time to publish a workshop with pictures?

Love the site!!!! I own 2 kits, SDS 8 and SDS 1000. I wish Simmons would come
back and give Roland a run for their money!!

What a great website: here\'s a challenge: I have SDX pads and i need them to
work with a Roland TD-7 module.
The TD-7 is a 2 zones with chocke capalities module. I\'ve try using the stereo
jack cable but still won\'t trigger the SDX (ZI) pad. It only makes the sound
when I plug the connector, but not when I hit the pad. HELP!!!
Looking forward to hear from you soon.
Thanks.
Rod

comment: Well, I don\'t know what kind of output the TD-7 expects and what kind of output the ZI pads produce. Best way might be to check both signals: The ZI and (if possible) the Roland pad that fits to the TD-7.
But I can tell you that the ZI pads are technically based on FSR foils under the rubber. The border between center, middle and outer ring is fluent (as the voltage balance between tip and sleeve should be): The borders are adjusted in the SDX brain. I do not know anything of the Roland system, probably a totally different system. Take a volt meter and check it. Probably there\'s a way to convert the ZI output?
And if all fails: Sell the ZI pads to me ;-)))))

PS: I corrected your mail adress and removed your other posting

whoa. amazing how time flies. I\'m selling my SDS-9 Simmons kit soon. Just set
it up to take some photos and even turned it on. Damn if I didn\'t start playing
with it for about an hour and a half! I\'ll miss this old kit.
